Hypertonic Saline is a solution of sodium chloride (NaCl) in water with a concentration of NaCl higher than found in physiological saline (0.9 %). Hypertonic saline 7 % NaCl solutions are considered mucoactive agents. They are used to hydrate mucus in order to make it easier to cough up and out. Inhalation of hypertonic saline has been shown to help in other respiratory problems, specifically bronchiolitis. It is also recommended by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation as a part of cystic fibrosis treatment. In relation to cystic fibrosis, our AIM tool found the data that hypertonic saline can help cystic fibrosis patients by increasing hydration of the airways, which improves mucus clearance.
